BUSINESS
CONTINUITY AND DISASTER RECOVERY PLANNING

Business
continuity and disaster recovery planning are defined as the processes that are
aimed to help organizations to prepare for the disruptive events that might
affect its learning and functioning. The events might be simply power outages
that are caused by the backhoe in parking lots or the hurricane. Snedaker,  (2013 ) says that the involvement of the CS in
the process sometimes ranges from setting the plan into action in case of the
emergency, to providing support and input, to supervising the plan. As a
manager of the senior BCP management committee, I will be responsible for
initiation, oversight, planning, testing, approval and audit, implement the
management committee, coordinate the activities and supervise the continuity
plans and results of the quality assurance activities.( Costello,
2012).  The business under my management
will ensure that it is full protected from the disaster planning by approving
the government structure, clarifying my roles and those of my fellow
participants in the program, I will monitor the quality assurance processes,
supervise the creation of the list of the appropriate committees, teams to be
used to develop the plans and the working groups. I will achieve this by
looking into detail the contrast and comparisons of business continuity and
disaster planning together with the risk management in the contest of
information security.

Methods
of disaster recovery and business continuity planning

Business
continuity and disaster recovery are the procedures and processes that turn the
business systems like the software, hardware and data to complete operations
due to man-made or natural disaster.
Since the business increasingly relies on IT in its mission like
critical operations, it is therefore important to put in place plans in order
to ensure business viability is safe from critical incidents. To conquer or the
risks it is important then to mark on the number of data recovery procedures.
This will help the business data to be safe from critical conditions.

In
recovering the documents, the business can use the no disaster planning but
worthy backup procedures method. This is the best action the business can take
to prevent the disaster from deleting business information is to back up the
data on the computers in every day and store the backups offsite at the safe
archival company but not in the employees homes. In doing this even if the
hardware or the software is interrupted, the data can still be loaded up and be
replaced with all the replaceable data. The backups also should be tested daily
to make sure that they are all working.

On
the other hand, the business will put up a cold site disaster recovery solutions.
An effective and simple business backup solution is setting up a cold site
recovery data solution. A cold site data solution is a reserved place on the
data center where the business can set up new equipment in the time of
disaster. This is a popular data recovery method since it intends to be cheap
than many other options of recovery methods but gives the business the ability
to survive in case of the disaster.

On
looking at business continuity planning, this involves more apart from
developing plans. This is a critical element of business continuity plan
because the less experienced person can be called to execute the continuity
plans. The most elements of business continuity plan include business recovery
plans which are focused on the recovering of critical business procedures to
minimal levels. There is also the crisis management plan with set of designed
procedures which are aimed to assist the management team that is tasked with
giving response to an event with objectives of stabilizing situations and
preparation for recovery. The IT incident management plan on the other hand,
has set of procedures in preparing IT in the recovered state regardless of what
caused the disaster.

The
executive managers therefore, can get assurance that business continuity
strategies will function in either using a test or the real world event. The designation
of business continuity requires the manager to identify the appropriate test
approach in the business.  This will be
done by documenting a test plan by the assistance of developing test objectives
and the associated criteria for success.( Cannon,  2016).  Also the approach will apply in developing the
test facilitation equipment including the test scripts and scenario
information, facilitating testing event which includes introduction of scenario
information.

Challenges
in business continuity and disaster recovery planning

Creating
of effective disaster recovery plan has its fair share on the challenges. To
start with, today’s business enterprises consider a backup and a business
continuity strategy critical, since, the IT leaders employ several recovery and
backup tools of the respondents which has a multiple disaster recovery systems
which overlaps the capability of recovery process. This also leads to arising
of numerous problems with the business’ recovery strategy, including the use of
several different systems and adding the cost of maintenance and licenses. This
can be addressed by
carrying out the smaller backups which can help to facilitate the organization
of the information, overall management and backup scheduling.

In business
continuity, the common challenge is the prohibitive of the cost. The process of
business continuity planning therefore becomes very expensive since the
availability of the requirements increases. This is because; many solutions require
investments on their maintenance and installations of additional hardware,
software, and the data centers. These requirements lead to increase of costs in
the business continuity. This can be addressed in that, instead of relying on
the physical servers which are very expensive to accommodate the backups, the
business should consider using efficient and affordable computing solutions.

Lack of staff involvement on the other hand,
it will lead to difficultness in carrying out the business continuity plan.
This is because, there are many requirements to be considered in the plan and
it is very difficult to relay the importance of the plan to the employees so
that to fully understand about the plan. The staff will help to manipulate the
plan and give the necessary directions on the importance of the plan. The issue
will be addressed by holding the company meetings to announce the essentials of
the business continuity plan and schedule the meeting with the key staff members
who takes the active roles in the planning process.
