I to start black Cinema. Today’s black Cinema focuses

I chose African American Cinema for many reasons. Black cinema is an important to me for many reasons but mainly because it brings history and stories of blacks to life. Because of black Cinema we are able to see African Americans life in many different attributes. We see slavery, racism, crime, drugs, amazing actors/actresses, dancers, black activist, civil right leaders and so much more. My favorite type of movie is Urban. I chose urban, drama-comedies which is what I did my poster on. I picked four of my favorite movies, which are Poetic Justice, menace to society, Cooley high and Friday. The movies are played by some of my favorite actors and rap/r&b artist such as Janet Jackson, Tupac, ice Cube Chris Tucker and etc.

I love urban movies and movies about blacks about growing up and surviving in the hood/ghetto/projects. Also, people get an insight on our lives and our struggles and how we succeed and come out on top. My favorite film director is Spike Lee. As you may know Spike Lee is multitalented due to him being a director, producer, writer and actor. He has played in a vast majority of his own films. His films show controversial social and political issues.

“Before the black cinema and black actors the black characters would be played by white people in black-face”. In 1903, Uncle Tom’s Cabin, starred the first black actor to ever appear on screen. Although black Cinema came to be by Oscar Micheaux founded the Micheaux Film and Book Company of Sioux City in Chicago and William D, Foster. Foster formed the Foster Photoplay Company, the first independent African-American film company. In 1912, Foster, produced and directed “The railroad Porter” which was the first film to start black Cinema. Today’s black Cinema focuses on basically anything, such as drama, comedy, thriller, urban, death, good, poverty, friends, tragedy, death, hope, pain, joy, depression and family and etc. “Early black filmmakers aimed to show the full humanity of African Americans with story lines and themes that countered prevailing ideologies about blackness”.

Black Cinema started from the bottom and made a name for themselves. It was a struggle for actors/actresses and black writers, directors and producers to get where they are today but with hard work, determination, motivation and most of all their stories(voice) to be told they made a way.  The stories were told from a black point of view that could only be told by a black person. It stands out now and it will never die, it will only get greater. It created a voice and has a meaning and I love to hear and see it. We got a chance learn about our past, see our present and have a view point of our future. By seeing it visually, the reality is brought to life.

Due to Spike Lee and Robert Townsend I’m 1980s black films made way for the 90s black film era. The films caught the attention of both black and white  audiences. The 90s was the golden age for black film, the break through age. It was also the golden age for hip hop.
Rappers and musicians transitioned into film as actors and actresses such as, Ice Cube,Tupac, Queen Latifah Janet Jackson. Black Cinema changed television. Tv shows came out in the 90s. For example, Moesha, A Different World, Family Matters, Kenan and Kel, Martin, Queen Latifah’s Living Single, Sister Sister and Malcolm & Eddie, In Living Color, The Fresh prince of bel air and more.
