In in women’s repression. The pattern in the wallpaper

In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” by Charlotte Perkins
Gilman, the story symbolizes the oppression of the woman in the 19th
century. From today view of how society is, in the 19th century it
was different compared to now. Woman were not in the workforce as men were,
they weren’t able to vote, and they didn’t have the right to speak for
themselves. When a woman was married, the husband had the legally right to
owning everything that she had own. From reading this story Gilman wanted this
to change. In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper” Gilman gives the readers the
covey of wanting to change how woman are treated but she also gives symbols in
the story as well.  In the story, Gilman
uses the symbols of showing the lack of restriction on women, the lack of
public interaction, and the equality of woman.

In the story “The Yellow Wallpaper”, the main symbol is the
wallpaper. The wallpaper had symbolized many things about the narrator. The
wallpaper in the story symbolizes the mental block between the woman had in the
1900’s. The wallpaper in the story was the reason of the narrator oppression,
the color yellow of the wallpaper is what had caused the sickness of her
starring at it all day long. For her seeing the wallpaper all the time, it
feels like she is being imprison. “I never saw a worse paper in my life.” This
is a symbol that shows that force that men have over women do. The pattern in
the wallpaper, it what symbolizes the patterns in 1900’s society in women’s
repression. The pattern in the wallpaper symbolizes with the social patterns
that can’t be escaped like she couldn’t. Every chance she had seen the
wallpaper she had got anger from being the only thing that she could see “the impertinence
of it and the everlastingness”. The anger she had towards the wallpaper, was
the reflection of the women’s frustration with the society in the 1900’s. The
wallpaper complex of design shows symbolizes her struggle to be set free. The hatred
towards the wallpapers represents all the things that she detests of her life
at the moment. The ability of her not being able to write, and not being able
to take care of her children and being turn into someone that she is not is her
hatred towards to the wallpaper building up.

Also in the story, the other
symbol that she had pointed out was the lack of public interaction. In the
story, having the husband keeping his wife away from the public and lock up in
a room, symbolizes the women in the 1900’s of being out of the public and
always being home and not in the work force. The women were always needed to
stay inside and to take care of the children and clean the house. In the 1900’s
women didn’t belong in the government nor in the workplace they were only to be
in the house. In the story, Gilman emphasizes that a lot, she is strictly forbidden
of doing things. She isn’t allowed to do any type of work for her husband and
child. In the story, Gilman states “Personally, I believe that congenial work,
with excitement and change, would do me good” she is stating that if woman were
given the opportunity have equal rights as men given. She believes that if that
opportunity was given to them, females would do a better job at it.

Gilman’s support of the women’s
suffrage is written all in the story “The Yellow Wallpaper”. She uses many
symbols to emphasis the woman’s struggle of equality in the 1900’s. The husband
takes her away from society because of illness, while she tells him that she is
fine. This the symbolic for the women in the 1900’s that were struggling for equality.
From them being ignored and oppressed by men. In the story, john isn’t allowing
his wife to be able to fix herself and get better. “But John says the very worst
thing I can do is to think about my condition”. This shows that when women try
to get free and be something else the men oppress over them and take control. During
the nineteenth century, woman had been retained to not being able to work and
not have an opinion about be able to do so. The pattern in the wallpaper is one
of the creepy woman that jane sees outside the window. “‘I’ve got out at
last,’ said I, ‘in spite of you and Jane. And I’ve pulled off most of the
paper, so you can’t put me back!’ is the woman in the wallpaper, that is really
one person. This symbolizes that they had won their independence and they had
broken the rules that had detained them from being free.

John the husband was also one of
the symbols in the story, he had represented the male role of superiority of
the wife. He had taken over his wife’s illness and had to put her away from
society to cure it. That had symbolized on how men in the 1900’s had the inability
to recognize the woman’s capabilities out in the real world instead of just
being at home. His view of having her getting plenty of rest and dealing with
less of society shows that men have the lack of reality of dealing with women
and their real capabilities they have. They way that john and the doctor are in
the position of to tell her what she’s acceptable to do and not to do as a
woman. John holds a simplistic view of her mental illness and his cure to heal
her, and it symbolizes the society view of the domestic view of women’s roles
in the 19th century.

In conclusion, the story
symbolizes the oppression of the woman in the 19th century. In the
19th century society was different compare what it is today. Woman
were not in the workforce as men were, they weren’t able to vote, and they
didn’t have the right to speak for themselves. In the story “The Yellow
Wallpaper” Gilman gives the readers the covey of wanting to change how woman
are treated but she also gives symbols in the story as well.  In the story, Gilman uses the symbols of
showing the lack of restriction on women, the lack of public interaction, and
the equality of woman. Also in the story, the narrator world is where he controls
everything that she does. She is not allowed to be how to pleases and be the
creative person that she is. All the symbols in the story are to enforce and
show on woman were not giving the opportunity to be free and how man were
always over them. “The Yellow Wallpaper” was to emphasize that woman should be
able to be themselves and express themselves and have the opportunity to do something
they want.
